Sophie Galarneau

d. May 15, 2025

Binghamton

Our beloved Sophie died on May 15, 2025. Our hearts are forever broken.

Sophie loved Legos, Magic the Gathering, Lord of the Rings, and Dungeons & Dragons. She loved reading, baking, and cooking (especially if she could add Frank's Hot Sauce). She made a fabulous cheesecake -- often at 2 a.m. She had a well-defined appreciation for food and counted Peking Quick One (in Tonawanda, NY) as her favorite place for Chinese food. She always recommended the cold slipped cucumbers, orange beef, and pork dumplings.

Sophie loved singing. We could always pick her out among the chorus members because she was the one swaying with the music. She also enjoyed voice and piano lessons for a while.

Sophie did not like sports but agreed to play baseball for a season and gamely joined the Cross-Country team in middle school. She did love a solo walk in the woods (if it wasn't too hot or cold).

Her biggest love was Magic the Gathering. She played whenever and wherever she could - online, in person, it didn't matter. She even taught Kathy how to play until it got to the point where it was no fun for her, because Kathy was so bad at it.

Sophie grew up in Amherst, NY and moved to Binghamton, NY for college. She had planned to pursue a career in computer science. She loved learning, hated tests and despised writing papers.

Her favorite book series was The Locked Tomb although she didn't like the second or third book as much as the first but was really hoping the fourth book would be good. She loved a good romance novels and was an active participant on book channels on Discord.

She adored cats and tolerated dogs. She hated direct sunshine but appreciated it from inside a cool building. She wanted to live in Seattle because "it was dreary and rainy most of the time."

Those who are left behind to mourn her loss include her mother, Kathy Lisborg; her father, Andrew Galarneau; her siblings Lydia and Will Galarneau; her grandparents Anthony and Phyllis Galarneau; and many friends and "chosen" family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 31 from 12-4 pm at the Ukranian-American Civic Center, 205 Military Road, Buffalo, NY 14207.
