Shirley Panetti

d. August 16, 2021

Shirley Carroll Panetti, 85, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Known to those who loved her as "Warrior", "Mama Shirley", & "Bear", Shirley wore many hats in her life, but the one she enjoyed most was being a mom. Anyone lucky enough to call her mom understood that God broke the mold after he made her. "Mama Shirley" loved fairly, and she loved fiercely. She understood heartache and pain, but she still loved deeply and unconditionally and never let life's unfairness make her bitter or resentful. She knew how to be a friend. A true conversationalist, she could talk to anyone about anything. She enjoyed travel, cooking, and baking, but most of all, feeding people. Those who knew her remember her many kindnesses and her warm, welcoming home with a door that was always open. She was the best, a top-notch, class act all the way, and we could all benefit from her wisdom: She was the first to forgive, accepted what she couldn't change, and did the best she could every single day. She believed that everything happens for a reason, the truth always comes out in the end, and that this, too, shall pass. She often said that if you couldn't accept something, you should get away from it. She was a brave, confident warrior, and had a deep faith. She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Assumption Church, but she also believed that you didn't need a church to pray because God is always with you. She is predeceased by her father and mother George and Madeline Shaffer Carroll; husband Louis Panetti, daughter Angela Leach; son Ricardo DiRose; brothers William, John, and Donald Carroll; and sisters Ruth "Rusty" Fuller and Nancy Carroll. She is survived by her children Anthony (Marcia) DiRose, Vincent (Patricia) DiRose; Celia (Keith) Ulmer, and Martina (William Finch) DiRose; grandchildren Azura Kelley, Heather DiRose, Dominick DiRose, Nicolas DiRose, Logan Ulmer, and her support dog, Zuccarello Finch. The family would like to thank a special caregiver and family friend Sandra McAvoy & Maggie Hungerford. The Lourdes at Home team; specifically PT: Bill Reynolds, PTA: Alina, Aide: Shannon. Both the Lourdes Palliative care and Hospice programs; specifically RN’s: Marie & May. You are angels on earth and your care and dedication are greatly appreciated. The family will receive friends from 4 pm until 7 pm, Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the DeMunn Funeral Home, 36 Conklin Avenue, Binghamton. A private graveside service will be held at Calvery Cemetery. In place of flowers please consider memorial contributions to the Rescue Mission 56 Whitney Ave, Binghamton, NY 13901.
