Ruth A.
(Ackerman) Rappaport
April 28, 1915 – August 22, 2017
An era has ended. Ruth (Ackerman) Rappaport of Binghamton, after a long and fulfilling life, passed away peaceably on August 22, 2017, at age 102 at the Vestal Park Nursing Center. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, A. Jack Rappaport and was survived by her son Mark L. Rappaport (Betty) of Binghamton, daughter Ellen Singer Coleman (Michael) of Philadelphia, grandchildren Renee Rappaport (Marcel) Menard, Jody Rappaport (Jeff) Prall, Chad (Cari) Singer and Cara Rock Singer (Aaron) and great grandchildren, Izayah Menard, Isabella Prall and Liora Rock-Singer, as well as many loving and adoring nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was born on the Lower East Side of New York City on April 28, 1915 and moved with her family to Owego, where she completed high school. She graduated from Cortland State Teachers College and then taught elementary education in both Endicott and Binghamton. Her parents and four siblings moved to Binghamton, where she met and married the love of her life, A. Jack Rappaport in 1941. Ruth's lifelong passion included political debates, entertaining family and friends, gardening, decorating and antiquing. She and Jack loved entertaining family and friends, all of whom enjoyed celebrating Jewish holidays and other occasions at the Rappaport home. Ruth never forgot her Jewish religion, heritage and customs. She and Jack were founding members of Temple Concord. Ruth was an active member, including serving as Chairman of the Sisterhood Antique Shows. She was also a member of Hadassah and the Jewish Community Center. Ruth loved taking courses at Harper College and SUNY Binghamton along with Lyceum. Her love of reading and learning kept her mind astute and aware of ongoing changes in the world. She participated in the League of Women Voters and Roberson Center where she was a docent. Thus, she was a wonderful conversationalist throughout her life. Ruth was loved, admired and respected by so many and will truly be missed. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living Residence, where she resided for two years after moving from The Towers and thereafter at Vestal Park, where she moved shortly before her passing. We all express deep gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Ramanujan and Dr. Liu, who so expertly and lovingly cared for Ruth throughout her adult life. Funeral services will be held at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, New York on Friday, August 25, 2017, at noon. Burial will be at Temple Israel Cemetery in Conklin. The family will receive friends at Temple Concord from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. before the funeral service. Shiva will be observed on Saturday and Sunday at the home of Betty and Mark Rappaport. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of one's own choice. Arrangements are with Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home.
