Olive Whipple
of Binghamton
Olive Whipple, of Binghamton, passed away Friday October 8 th 2010, at Elizabeth Church Manor.
Olive was born December 4 th , 1912 in Salamanca, NY the daughter of Howard and Allie Hancock.
Olive graduated from Salamanca High School, Fredonia State Teacher's College, with a Master's Degree in Music Education from New York University. She taught music in Mount Morris, New York for three years. In 1937, she came to Binghamton to join the music department in the Johnson City School District.
In 1941 she married Thornton Whipple and entered into Binghamton activities with enthusiasm. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Binghamton and was a member of the choir for forty years. She also served on the Session and as a Deacon of the Church. Olive taught Sunday School and was Superintendent of the Primary Department. She served in the Woman's Association and was a Stephen Minister. Olive served many organizations in the community: Monday Afternoon Club, Harmony Club, Shakespeare Club, Girls Clubs of America, Binghamton Hospital Auxiliary, Good Shepherd Fairview Home, and Docents at Roberson Memorial Gallery. She will be remembered as an enthusiastic supporter of the community and loving friend and mother.
She is survived by her husband, Thorton W. Whipple, of Binghamton, three sons, William R. Whipple of Philadelphia, PA. Robert T. and Kay Whipple of Rochester NY., and Frederick W. and Laurie Whipple of Fullerton, California. Three grandchildren, Christopher R. Whipple of San Francisco, Priscilla M. Whipple of Rochester, NY., and Julianna Whipple of Fullerton, CA.
Internment will be in the Whipple Mausoleum at the Floral Park Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 42 Chenango Street, Binghamton NY on Saturday October 16 th , at 11:00 a.m. Family members will receive guests in the Library Lounge of the Church from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.
