Madelyn "Mickey" Nichols, age 100, without a word and one last sigh slipped into the arms of the heavenly angels on July 2, 2026, at her home in Hampstead, NC, with her loving family by her side. In addition to her parents, Roy and Leila LaCount Lucia she was predeceased by her husband, Richard "Dick" Nichols, her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Scott, her brother, John Lucia and her brother-in-law, Ike Darrow, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia "Patti" and Anthony "Tony" Longo, Hampstead, North Carolina, grandson, Brian (Kaari) Longo, Wilmington, North Carolina and her sister, Marjorie Darrow, Binghamton, New York. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.

Mickey was born September 26, 1925 to Roy and Leila LaCount Lucia in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The family moved to New York and made Binghamton their life-long home. She graduated from Vestal High School and went on to attend and graduate from Binghamton City Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1946. She pursued her nursing career at Kroehler Manufacturing Company and through the years with several private practice physicians in Binghamton. She later became Supervisor of the Hemodialysis Unit at Binghamton General Hospital and then as Head Nurse in the Orthopedic Unit until her retirement in 1985.

Mickey loved her family with all her heart; she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and wonderful friend to all who knew her. Mickey was always the first one to help family and friends in their time of need. She was an avid bowler, always wearing her Bermuda shorts and knee socks no matter the season, loved to read, solve Word Search puzzles and tend to her many flowerbeds. We will miss her presence in our lives but will forever cherish the wonderful memories we made with her.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Mickey's Tuesday companion and Saturday night dinner date, Kim Veronesi and our wonderful neighbor Brett Weaver, who was always ready to help when and however needed. Finally, the caring staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington, North Carolina for their kindness, compassion and guidance as Mickey entered her final journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider a donation in her memory to one of her charities: Broome County Humane Society, 167 Conklin Avenue, Binghamton, New York 13903, Wounded Warrior Project, The Shriners' Children's Hospital, Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401-7335 or a charity of your choosing.
