Lyle E. Canough

d. January 21, 2023

Lyle Erwin Canough passed away on January 21, 2023 at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Ann Canough, his brother Gerald Canough, his first wife Jacqueline and second wife, Frances. Lyle is survived by his daughters Wendy Canough, Sheila Stroh and Gay Canough and by his grandchildren Alex, Roger, Shallan, Sam and Ellie and 8 great-grandchildren. Lyle lived to meet his great-great grandson, Anthony. Lyle was born in 1930 in Massena NY. Imagine the changes he has seen! Back then, homes were just beginning to have electricity and telephones were not common yet. Hardly anyone had an automobile in the 30s. And as for modern electronics, those were still decades in the future. But Lyle was a brilliant man and he easily learned all of the new tech. He reconnected with old friends via the Internet when he was 80 years old and read hundreds of books on his Kindle. Lyle was also a brave man. He was a medic during the Korean War, patching up wounded men on the front lines. He once confided to his daughter that he was afraid of going to the dentist, but he courageously carried a wounded soldier thru enemy fire and was wounded himself in the process. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his valor during the war. Memories Growing up with the Best Dad Ever Lyle had 3 daughters. But rather than lament the lack of sons, he simply involved us in his hobbies. We spent time together building model airplanes and small kayaks. He involved us in planting a garden each year and showed us how to tend it. When Gay needed a car, he purchased 2 old cars of the same make and together, we made one good car out of them. Lyle lived with his daughter (Gay) and grandson (Alex) in Endicott NY, these past few years. This gave Alex time to get to know his Grandpa. We are all going to miss Lyle/Dad/Grandpa. He will remain in our memory always. A celebration of Lyle’s life will take place Feb. 25, 2 PM at UUCB, 183 Riverside Dr., Binghamton. To forward condolences please visit www.demunn.com.
