John Stephen Zurenda, 82, passed away on July 8, 2025.
He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 54 years, Judy; his son, David; his daughter, Darah (Tony); his cherished grandchildren, Alisandra (Nick), and Sydney (Joe), Luke; his great-grandson, Xae; and his brother, Robert (Marie). He also leaves behind a large extended family and his four-legged companion Mazi. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Deidre; his parents, Michael and Anna Skojec Zurenda; his brothers, Paul, Michael, Stephen, August, Joseph, George, Peter, James, Jerome, and William; his sisters, Maryann Hawe and Margaret Wehman; and his daughter-in-law Kelly.
John loved God, his family, and his country. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War and remained active in the Marine Corps League and V.F.W. Post 1611, where he held roles as quartermaster and commander. He was rarely seen without a Vietnam Veteran or Marine Corps cap on his head. A dedicated member of his local community, John was an active participant and life member of the Town of Binghamton Fire Department and was also a member of Hawleyton Methodist Church. There, he led youth groups and drove the church van for annual Simpson Park Camp meetings-roles he filled with joy and commitment. A passionate supporter of youth sports in Binghamton, John could often be found manning the concession stands, serving treats to children as they competed.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John treasured time with his family. He made countless trips across the country to support his children during their military service in the Air Force and to be present for his grandchildren's milestones.
John was also known for his love of sports. An athlete throughout his life, he continued playing well into his 70s. His passion for the game was matched only by the enthusiasm with which he cheered on his children and grandchildren.
