James G Sitek

October 17, 1956 — July 4, 2025

Binghamton

James Gerard Sitek, born October 17, 1956, in Dearborn, Michigan, passed away in the line of duty on July 4, 2025, in Conklin, New York.

Raised in Michigan, Jim graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Wyandotte in 1974. Jim was an accomplished rower, having won three national “schoolboy” championships while in high school. He represented the United States twice in Europe at the World Junior Rowing Championships after winning the U.S National Junior title. Jim was also an avid runner, having run numerous marathons including the Boston Marathon.

Jim was a respected Software Development Engineer at IBM, recognized for his expertise and lasting contributions to the computer software industry. He held degrees from Marietta College, Michigan State University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, including a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and dual Master’s Degrees in Statistics and Computer Science.

Jim met his beloved wife, Suzanne (“Susie”) Sitek, when both were relocated for work to Halfmoon, New York—where they discovered they lived in the same apartment building. That chance meeting led to a lifetime of love and partnership. They were married on November 11, 1989, in Burlington, Vermont.

A devoted father, Jim is survived by his children: Sarah, Rachel, Matthew (Rachael Hamlin), and Julia Sitek. He is also survived by his siblings: Dennis (Mary Ann) Sitek, Richard (Patti) Sitek, Mary Ellen (Daniel) O’Keefe, and Donna (Keith) Dambrot; his father-in-law, Hilton Place; and his brother and sisters in-law: Louise (William) Gregorek, Lynn (Leigh Jr.) Lacaillade, Michael (Mary) Place, and Allison Place Adams. He leaves behind many treasured nieces, nephews, and his cherished dogs - Charlie, Oakley, and Pete. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Helen Sitek, and his mother-in-law, Elaine Place.

Jim was known for his quick wit and warm humor, often brightening gatherings with his well-timed jokes. He had a passion for woodworking and was always ready to share his craftsmanship with family and friends. A loyal fan of Michigan State football and basketball, Jim rarely missed watching a game. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, making memories filled with laughter, joy, and togetherness.

Jim’s legacy extends far beyond his professional achievements. He dedicated over 40 years to the volunteer fire service, beginning with the Halfmoon Fire Department and continuing with the West Colesville Fire Company, where he served since 1990. Rising through the ranks to become Chief, Jim was admired for his humility, tireless work ethic, and deep commitment to the fire service. He was a mentor, leader, and brother to hundreds of firefighters across New York State. The members of West Colesville became more than colleagues - they became his extended family.

On July 4, 2025, Jim made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to a house fire in Conklin, New York. Though the loss is profound, his family finds comfort in knowing he died doing what he loved: serving and protecting his community.
