Ardelia Louisa Fiske Dewees Hanson, known to everyone as Fiske, was born in Binghamton on July 2 1937 to Frances Brush Dewees and Reverend Theodore Dewees. The youngest of five children, she grew up on the West Side, graduating from Binghamton Central HS in 1955, and Harpur College in 1959. Following college, Fiske and Walter Knute Hanson of Utica were married until his passing in 1994. Fiske was employed at the SUNY Binghamton Library and the Binghamton Public Library before changing careers to work for Broome Developmental Center, becoming assistant director of the Loder Avenue group home in Endicott prior to her retirement in 1998.
The favorite aunt of her many nieces and nephews, Fiske was energetic, caring, witty, and eclectic. Although she could talk her youngest son's ear off at times, she fiercely maintained close relationships with family and friends. Fiske was deeply involved in social and environmental issues, the local community, particularly in Southside beautification projects, and with the Binghamton branch of the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research (IDMR), of which she was a co-founder.
Fiske is survived by her two sons Dana M Hanson and Jason S Hanson, daughter-in-law Joo Hee Ihm, and two granddaughters Annie Hanson and Allie Hanson. We who know and love her shall miss her dearly.
In accordance with the wishes of Fiske and her family, there will be no formal funeral service. However, you are encouraged to share your memories of Fiske by visiting www.demunn.com.
