Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ernest Mikades, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 2, 2017. He was born and raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. During World War II he sailed the seas as a Merchant Marine assisting allied troops around the globe. Ernest helped save his ship from sinking during a Nazi attack. Later he went to work at Sardi's Restaurant in Manhattan and was a shop steward in the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ernest was the son of William and Selma Mikades, his brothers were Gus and George, all of whom are deceased. He was married for 62 years to the late Sophia Vivian Mikades. He is survived by his children, Connie and Ron Johnson, Binghamton, Maria Mikades and Michael Riolo, Endicott and William George Mikades, Queens; treasured grandchildren, Sophia Johnson and David Thompson, Roosevelt Johnson, Rosa and Alex Kermidas, Ernest Chaluisant and Aimee Grace; great-grandchildren Samirah Johnson, Damien Johnson and Melody Thompson.At his request services will be private. Ernest made one of his life's missions to help educate people about the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and expressed his desire that the generations current and future continue that work in honor of his brother Gus, who died in the service of the ALB.
