Charles was born on February 13th, 1944 in Brooklyn. He later moved to Binghamton, where he spent the majority of his life. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, attaining the level 4th degree. He was a dedicated community member and helped anyone he became aware of that needed assistance. It was not uncommon for Charles to show up with birthday cakes, Easter Baskets, cards, or a host of other gifts to benefits at the Knights of Columbus. Charles also volunteered his time assisting local youth baseball leagues at Macarthur Park. Charles lived a meaningful life through simple pleasures. He loved the snow, a cup of coffee and watching his many favorite sports teams. An avid fan of NASCAR, wrestling, New York Mets, and especially his beloved football team the Buffalo Bills.
Charles was predeceased by his parents Charles Sr. and Maurice Dettling ; his brothers Albert Dettling and George Dettling. He is survived by his brother Richard Dettling (Denise); and Nieces and Nephews. He also leaves behind friends, including; Mary Tokos (Randy), Angela Tokos-Coolbaugh; Melissa Villanella (Tony); Paul Villanella, and Godchildren Cody Tokos and Kasey Tokos
Charles was a daily visitor at the Park Bench Delicatessen where he met his family, those people who were not related by blood but by heart. He loved his family dearly, and they loved him just as much. Most of all his favorite thing to do was to be and talk with the people he loved. Charles had an uncanny ability to make you smile in the silliest ways and he loved to hear the most recent news in one's life. He has left an everlasting mark on his corner of the world, and he will be sorely missed. We will forever feel the void of his absence. As Charles would say-
” We love you to the sky”.
