Bernard Segal

January 20, 1936 — July 1, 2025

Bernard Mortimer Segal, born on January 20, 1936, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, at the age of 89.

Bernard was a high academic achiever gaining a scholarship to attend the prestigious McGill University. He continued his education with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University.

Bernard worked at notable companies, including Singer Link and 3M Co. He sold state of the art memory systems such as high-density magnetic disk drives that held 1.66 MB of memory, a massive quantity at the time. These were used by large institutions such as banks and hospitals who needed tremendous amounts of data storage. He was recognized as a top salesperson in the Northeast, earning honors that included prestigious trips.

Bernard is survived by his loving wife Ilana, his children Karen Friedenberg and Dr. Alan Segal, and their spouses Dr. Jeffrey Friedenberg and Dr. Thalia Smith-Segal. He had six wonderful grandchildren Leora, Yaffa, Aviva, Jordan, Sophia, and Sydney.

Bernard enjoyed biking and playing tennis. A lifelong fan of watching sports of any kind (even golf), he particularly loved hockey stemming from his Canadian roots. He also enjoyed reading newspapers and magazines, and had a wealth of knowledge that would allow him to choose any Jeopardy category.

A committed volunteer, Bernard worked at his local temple, as a nursing home ombudsman, and participated in political campaigns for the Democratic Party. He had a keen interest in investing, often watching stock market shows, such as Mad Money with Jim Cramer and Squawk Box. According to his wife, he never bought low enough or sold high enough -- advice that only came after it was too late.

A graveside service will be held on July 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Beth David Cemetery in Conklin. Donations to honor Bernard's memory may be made to Beth David Synagogue or Hillel Academy of Broome County.
