Barbara E. Thompson

Barbara Elizabeth Thompson, nee Green, age 85, formerly of Johnson City, NY, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 22, 2024. She was born April 6, 1938, in Binghamton, NY. She was predeceased by her parents Delmar and Barbara Mae Green, and by her sister Dolores.

She is survived by two sons, Warren Thompson of Knoxville, TN, and Steven Thompson, of Sinking Spring, PA; Four Grandchildren Kayleigh Thompson, Jeffery Thompson, Eric Thompson, and Connor Thompson; one great-granddaughter Delilah Thompson; and six nieces and nephews, Deborah Boone, Dorrie deNagy, Deidre Bidwell, George Gibson, Judith Thompson, and Michael Thompson.

She was a recent resident of Berks County, Pennsylvania having lived in Broome County, NY most of her life. She received a BS in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz and enjoyed making pottery. Her interests included spending time with her family, gardening, and genealogy. But her passion was civic responsibility. She was active in the civil rights and peace movements in the 1960s, and in addressing problems that faced the communities she lived in, such as solid waste disposal, clean water, opposing a Walmart location, opposing the dissolution of the municipality she lived in, etc. Throughout her life, she generously gave her time and talents to make her communities better places to live. She was a member of C.O.R.E., the League of Women Voters, NAACP, Common Cause, Johnson City Partners, and many other organizations.

Family will receive friends at the DeMunn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 36 Conklin Avenue Binghamton, NY 13903 on Friday March 8, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
