d. November 3, 2024

August P. Mueller, 91, passed away November 3, 2024. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, he was a graduate of Mahnomen High School and Moorhead State University with a degree in mathematics. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (M.Sc., Ph.D. in Zoology-Immunology), a NSF postdoctoral fellow at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. August was Associate Professor at Binghamton University 1962-1998, Master of Newing College retiring after 36 years of service. One of August’s passions was the bicycle. About ten years ago he was asked by a young person years ago how long he had been bicycling his answer then was over 70 years, impressed by his answer the young person asked how far he had bicycled in those years. After some calculation his answer was “at least a quarter million miles. He was an active member of several outdoor organizations, such as Southern Tier Bicycle Club, Triple Cities Hiking Club, Naturalist Club was the co-founder of Binghamton Outdoor Pursuits at Binghamton University. He commuted to work from his Vestal home by bicycle. For many years, August lead the charge of club members who spend hours refurbishing donated bikes to be given to children of the George F. Johnson Dream Center housed in Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City and adults of the rescue mission.   He will be remembered for the thousands (about 6000) of old bicycles he fixed up in his garage to give away through the Sarah Jane church.  What he started has been passed on to a bike crew at the church.  He joked he had to give it up when he got down to work and had trouble getting back up a couple years ago.  (When he gave it all up, his wife Joan got a garage back for the car!).

One of fourteen children of John and Elizabeth Mueller of Mahnomen, Minnesota, he is predeceased by his parents, 7 brothers and 5 sisters. August is survived by his spouse, Joan, daughter and son-in-law Kirsten and Dan Adams of Fort Worth, Texas and son Bruce “Burt” Mueller of Endwell, treasured grandchildren, Kimberly, Daniel III, and Andrew Adams and Nathan Mueller.
