Obituary of Charlotte OliphantCharlotte Halbert Oliphant, formerly of Binghamton, passed from this earthly life on October 23, 2015 at Chase Health, New Berlin.Charlotte Elizabeth was the sixth child of Robert M. and Jennie (Wilson) Halbert, born on September 1, 1930, ironically in Chase Hospital, New Berlin. Affectionately known by family and friends throughout her life as “Shoeie,” she was always very proud to say she came from Gilbertsville, graduating with the Class of 1947, Gilbertsville Central School.After shorter terms of employment at Bendix, Sidney and as a dental office receptionist, she worked several years at Link Aviation in Binghamton. It was in the last employment, that she met Melvain Oliphant, an electrical engineer. She and Mel were married July 30, 1960 in Goshen, NH at the home of the groom’s parents.Mel and Shoeie took great pride in the naming of the street they lived on in Chenango Bridge for most of their married life, As their home was the first to be built on the Germishe Road, it officially was renamed Charmel Drive, a combination of their names.An avid sports enthusiast, her favorite teams were the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, New York Giants, and the Orangemen of Syracuse. In her younger years she was an avid bowler participating in many state tournaments and she was active in the local Garden Club, serving as its President at one time. Mel and Shoeie loved their two toy poodles, their pride and joy for many years and observing the wildlife and birds in their Charmel Drive backyard provided years of enjoyment for them.She was pre-deceased by her husband of nearly 44 years, Melvain Oliphant, stepson, David Oliphant; three brothers, Robert W. Halbert, T. Russell Halbert, and James B. Halbert; and two sisters, Helen Prentice and Gertrude D’Ambrosio.She is survived by two stepdaughters, Jean Oliphant and Penny Parkhurst; a brother-in-law, Peter D’Ambrosio, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Howard Bailey, Sidney.A memorial service officiated by Reverend Mark Piedmonte of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church, will be held at the Vestal Hills Memorial Park, 3997 Vestal Road, Vestal where she will be entombed on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Broome County Humane Society, 2 Jackson Street, Binghamton 13903 or to the Major’s Inn Foundation, P.O.
