Nora Herz, (nee Hayum), passed away suddenly on January 14th. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Werner, her parents Charles and Irma Hayum and her parents-in-law, Isaac and Lina Herz.
Nora was born in Trier, Germany in 1936. She and her parents fled Nazi Germany in 1941 and settled in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. Eleven years later, the family moved to Windsor, NY and bought the Riverview Farm. Nora graduated from Windsor Central High School and soon after married the only love of her life, Werner Herz. The couple settled at Big Island Farm in South Windsor, working and raising their five children. Nora was actively involved in the Windsor community, with all school activities and with her numerous friends in the hometown she loved and in which she lived until just a year ago.
Nora has been a member of Temple Israel in Vestal, since arriving in Windsor. She was active in its Hadassah Chapter, in its youth group and taught Sunday School. She rarely missed religious services, or events and the synagogue was an essential part of her life and another network of lifelong friends.
For the last 23 years, Nora worked as a home health care aide for The Family & Children’s Society.
Nora is survived by her son Michael and his wife Shoshanna of Kibbutz Ketura, Israel, her son Robert of Canton, GA, her daughter Deborah Walike and her husband Craig of Brattleboro, VT, her daughter Jacquelyn and her husband Ron O’Brien of Willits, CA and her son David, of Astoria, NY. She is also survived by the absolute lights of her life, her grandchildren; Yogev, Inbar and Leor Herz, Eric, Loren and Ariel Herz-O’Brien, and Ryan and Jessie Herz. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm, Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Drive, Binghamton with Rabbi Tziona Szajman officiating. Interment will follow services in Temple Israel Riverside Cemetery. Shiva will be observed from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Monday, January 19th through Thursday, January 22nd.
