Melvin D. “Mel” Snitchler went to be with the Lord on May 31, 2014, surrounded by family. Mel was born October 21, 1941 in Binghamton, New York.
Mel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marlene, daughter Lynne and sons, Stephen and Todd (Melanie), grandchildren Kaitlyn & Kiersten, Colleen, Corinne, James & Justin, and Nathan & Megan, his brothers and sisters, Shirley Johnson, Wanda Hoffman, David Snitchler, Paul Snitchler, Rebecca Griffiths and their spouses, sister-in-law and brother-in-law William & Ruth Snell, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his father Morris and mother Nilva, his brothers Daniel and Jonathan and sisters, Carol and Marcia.
Mel retired from IBM after 27 years of service. Mel continued to work after his retirement, most recently at AutoZone. Mel spent many years volunteering on the Town of Binghamton Volunteer Fire Department, coaching little league baseball in the Town of Binghamton, using his amateur radio skills to help with the Empire State Games, helping overseas missionaries stay in touch with their families in the United States, and serving as Cub Master of Pack 83. Known to many by his amateur radio call sign “WE2K”, Mel spent many years and countless hours at his favorite hobby. Mel enjoyed fly fishing and flying his model planes, and spending winter months in Zephyrhills, Florida. Mel was a life member of Faith Bible Church, Binghamton, New York.
Funeral services will be held 10 am, June 4, 2014 at Faith Bible Church, 1807 Hawleyton Road, Binghamton with Pastor Aaron Keteles officiating. Interment will follow services in Quaker Lake Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4 pm until 7 pm, Tuesday, June 3, 2014 atDeMunn Funeral Home, 36 Conklin Avenue, Binghamton. If desired, donations can be made to Faith Bible Church in Mel’s name.
