G. Raymond Pohl, 94, died April 6, 2014. He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 63 years; Ann. Raymond cared for her from the onset of her illness and stayed with her throughout. He was also predeceased by his parents, Harold and Gladys Pohl, older brother, Robert and sister, Polly all of Watertown, NY. Raymond is survived by his children; David L. Pohl and Dr. Mary Howsen, Ithaca and Richard F. and Sharon L. Pohl, Endwell, six step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, the Reverend David C. and Martha Pohl, Chelmsford, Mass., and their children, Becky and Eric and well as several other nieces and nephews.
Raymond attended Oswego Normal School before he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a bombardier until the AAC moved him into the intelligence branch of the service where his duty was to reconstruct plane crashes and determine their cause. After is honorable discharge, he returned to continue his education at Albany University. It was there he received his bachelors and masters degrees in teaching. He received his Superintendents Certificate from Cornell University. Raymond taught social studies at Spencer Central Schools, after which he became principal at Groton Central Schools. He moved to Endwell in 1959 to accepts the position of the first principal of Homer Brink Elementary School.
Raymond was a life-master in Bridge. He enjoyed playing at the Bridge Club in Vestal. He was also an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fly fishing down by the Beaverkill in the Roscoe area. He was a licensed guide in the Catskills.
Memorial services will be held 12:00 noon, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 475 Main Street, Johnson City with the Reverends Christine Day and David C. Pohl officiating.
