Our beloved mother and grandmother, Hazel Faughnan, 86, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. Hazel was a wise and loving person. Throughout her life she remained our source of support and inspiration. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Edwin A. Faughnan, parents, Doane and Ruth Fike and sisters; Janice and Rachel Fike. Hazel is survived by her children; Mary and Robert Southern, Oneonta, Polly and Tom Dillon, Binghamton, Joe and Joyce Faughnan, Oakdale, Minn., Jan and Jeff Canniff, Woodstock, Conn., Lucy Snyder, Fla., Maureen Faughnan, Binghamton, Jim and Genie Faughnan, Unadilla, Kate Faughnan, Orange Park, Fla., Tom Faughnan, Binghamton and Linda and Jeff Fravala, Fleming Island, Fla., treasured grandchildren; Ben, John, Julie, Renee, Marc, Denise, Caroline, Larry, Anthony, Samantha, Cassie, Luke, Rachel, Angela, Monica, Elisa, Edwin, Christina, James, Bethany, Danny, Hannah and Aidan, great-grandchildren; Quinn, Sal, the soon to be Carter John and Baby Davis. She leaves behind brother and sister-in-law, Giles and Linda Fike, Seymour, Ind., sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Doris and David Wheat, Deltona, Fla. and Carol Faughnan, Binghamton, Elizabeth Faughnan, Binghamton, Fran Howe, Endicott and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Hazel was a graduate of Binghamton City Hospital School of Nursing and went on to work as a labor and delivery room nurse for several years. She left nursing after marrying Edwin to pursue her greatest love, raising ten children as a loving and devoted mother. She returned to work at Rivermeade Manor until her retirement. Hazel was a longtime member of Saints John and Andrew RC Church. She enjoyed visiting family in Florida and having lunch with her family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Monsignor Michael T. Meagher, 9:30 am, Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Saints John and Andrew RC Church, 1263 Vestal Avenue, Binghamton. Hazel will be interred in Saint Augustine Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends at the DeMunn Funeral Home, 36 Conklin Avenue, Binghamton from 4:00 until 7:00 pm, Monday, January 27, 2014. Hazel’s family wishes to thank her granddaughter, Julie who put her grandmother before herself for the last few years, and the staffs of Lourdes Hospice for their loving concerned care.
