Maxine J. Martin

     Martin, Maxine J. of Binghamton     Maxine J. Martin, 85,  died on October 14, 2013 at her home with family by her side.  Maxine was known as a kind, charitable, deeply independent woman who greatly enjoyed travel and family visits, in particular time spent with her grandchildren. Born February 9, 1928 in Hornellsville, NY, she grew up in Friendship, NY, attended Alfred University, and was graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College.    She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, parents George E. and Myrtle Cary Rowe, and siblings Richard Rowe, Eliot Rowe, and Betty Bennett. Maxine is survived by children Nancy J. Martin of Leesburg, VA, Louis M. (Beth) Martin of Mattapoisett, MA, and Jeffrey S. (Marshall) Martin of Richmond, VA, grandchildren Claire, Tess, Katherine, Anne, and Virginia Martin, sister Mary Ellen (Richard) Johnson of Trumansburg, NY, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.     Maxine taught elementary school in Binghamton prior to raising her family, and later worked as a substitute teacher for various grades.  She spent a year in Japan prior to marriage teaching children of U.S. service members. Maxine was actively involved in the PTA at her children’s schools and regionally, and helped found the PTSA at West Junior High School. She also participated in civic and community life, including serving as an elections officer for many years.     Maxine was a proponent of lifelong learning, and was very active in the Lyceum Program, which is affiliated with Binghamton University, serving on the board and various committees.  She enjoyed attending Lyceum classes, discussion groups and occasional out-of-town trips.   Maxine also enjoyed performances with her friends at the Cider Mill Playhouse, Binghamton Philharmonic, Tri-Cities Opera, and other venues.         A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Sunday, October 20, 2013 at West Lawn Cemetery, Burbank Ave, Johnson City with Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell officiating.  Maxine’s family wishes to thank the staff from Lourdes Hospice, and especially her niece Linda, for their care and comfort.     The family respectfully declines flowers.  Memorial contributions in Maxine’s name may be made to Lyceum, Graduate School of Education, Binghamton University, PO Box 6000, Binghamton, NY 13902 or Lourdes Hospice, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850.  To forward condolences, please visit www.demunnfh.com.
