Ruth Phillips Antonson

October 21, 1928 — August 10, 2013

Ruth Phillips Antonson, 84, of Binghamton, formerly of Vestal, passed away on August 10, 2013. She was born on October 21, 1928 to the late Helen Weber and Donald Delaney Phillips in North Warren, Pennsylvania. As a child, she and her family moved to Adrian, MI, where she graduated from high school. She continued her education at Vassar College, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Math. She was employeed as a Calculator by General Electric in Schenectady, NY. It was there that she met Arvid L. Antonson. They were married on March 26, 1951. Her husband's career took Ruth to live in Milwaukee, WI, Waverly, PA, and finally Vestal, NY.   Ruth is survived by her husband, Arvid; three children and their spouses; Ellen and Dave Dutkowsky of Dallas, TX; Erik and Barbara Antonsson, of Pasadena, CA; and Ingrid and Dave Burica, of McCall, ID; six  grandchildren; and one great-grandson.   Throughout her life, Ruth actively contributed to her community through her volunteer work with the League of Women Voters, AAUW, Planned Parenthood, and advancing the cause of UNICEF. She enjoyed the camaraderie of PEO Sorority, the Jane Austen Book Club, the Tuesday Afternoon Investment Club, and Shakespeare Club. During the middle 70's she was a substitute math teacher at Union-Endicott High School. Ruth was an active member of Lyceum, and the Unitarian-Universalist Women. She loved antiques, setting a pretty table, Glimmerglass and Tri-Cities Opera, knitting beautiful Fair Isle sweaters, and searching for the best hamburger in the Binghamton area.   At the age of 40, Ruth learned to ski when her children took up the sport. She became an accomplished skier, spending most winter days at Greek Peak. She delighted in telling people she taught several of her grandchildren to ski, and continued skiing until 7 years ago, when she broke her leg. Even after giving it up, she said she had dreams of skiing down beautiful, white slopes.   Ruth and Arvid were previously members of the Quaker Lake Yacht Club, where they sailed their blue and yellow Sunfish, the S&H Green Stamp. The Sunfish was acquired after years of saving Green Stamps; enough books to fill the back compartment of their Plymouth station wagon.   A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Binghamton, 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 7, 2013.
