Melvin Seiden
of Binghamton
Melvin Seiden, 88, Emeritus Professor of English at Binghamton University, died on June 10, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline (Smith) Seiden; his children Reed (Nellie) Seiden of Richmond, California, Emily (Neil) Rose of Estero, Florida, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Holzman of Philadelphia, PA, and Daniel (Sandra) Seiden of Binghamton, NY and six grandchildren.
He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. An army veteran, he served in WWII with the 34th Infantry Division in the Italian Campaign at Monte Cassino. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Mel was an early pioneer at Harpur College, arriving from Kansas State University in 1959. He taught at Binghamton University until his retirement in 1994. He was the author of many published scholarly works on Shakespearean drama including Measure for Measure: Casuistry and Artistry, and The Revenge Motive in Websterean Tragedy. He was a Fulbright Scholar of English at Peking University in China 1984-1985. He had a passionate interest in public affairs, social justice, peace activism and the game of tennis. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many lifelong friends.
