Hon. Israel "Ike" Margolis

Hon. Israel “Ike” Margolis of Binghamton       Hon. Israel “Ike” Margolis, Retired Judge NYS Court of Claims, 86, died Saturday, December 10, 2011.  Ike is survived by devoted wife, Brenda, beloved children; Janet (Jonathan), Michael (Maureen), Deborah (Anne), five loving granddaughters, sister, Helen Smelser Daube, brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-law, nephews, niece and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Rabbi Moses and Belle Margolis and brother, Harry.      Judge Margolis was born June 23, 1925 in Binghamton where he attended Binghamton public schools and was graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1942. He received a B.A. degree from Cornell University in 1947 and a J.D. degree from Cornell Law School in 1950 He was managing editor of the Cornell Law Quarterly and a member of Order of the Coif. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. Judge Margolis was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1950 and later was admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a Bigelow Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School and taught practice training at Cornell Law School. In 1951 and 1952 he was Assistant Counsel to the Subcommittee on Privileges and Elections of the United States Senate.       He joined the Binghamton law firm of Chernin & Gold in which he was a partner from 1956 -1987. He was nominated to the Court of Claims by Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1987. He was a Broome County Election Commissioner from 1974-1984. He is a past President of the Broome County Bar Association.  He was President of the Professional and Advanced Gifts Divisions of the Broome County United Way campaigns and a trustee of Temple Israel.       Services will be held  12:00 pm, Monday, December 12, 2011 at Temple Israel, 4737 Deerfield Place, Vestal with Rabbi Tziona Szajman officiating. Burial will follow at Temple Israel Riverside Cemetery, Conklin. Shiva will be observed at the Margolis home on Monday from 7-9, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9.  Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Cornell Law School Public Interest Law Program, Box 223623, Pittsburgh, Pa 15251-2623 or to Young Judaea, Attn.
